This is a sketch of Penallta Colliery, the colliery closed in 1991 and this detail shows the scene as it is today - 2002. Unlike most of the other collieries in South Wales the winding gear shown here is still standing. I have a number of sketches of Penallta which I did back in the eighties, one day I'll use them to produce a major oil painting. It's one subject the locals are always asking for. The village of Cefn-Hengoed where I lived for twenty years is just visible in the distance.
