Welsh coal mines. Penallta Colliery (2002/21)

This is a sketch of Penallta Colliery, the colliery closed in 1991 and this detail shows the scene as it's seen in 2002. Unlike most of the other collieries in South Wales the winding gear shown here is still standing. I have a number of sketches of Penallta which I did back in the eighties, one day I'll use them to produce a major oil painting. It's one subject the locals are always asking for. The village of Cefn-Hengoed where I lived for twenty years is just visible in the distance.
